How to Prepare Your Car for an MOT in Poole

How to Prepare Your Car for an MOT in Poole

If your MOT is coming up, a few quick checks could be the difference between a pass and a fail. At Moto-Oil Autocentre in Poole, we carry out MOTs every day — and we’ve seen all kinds of avoidable fails. The good news? With a little preparation, you can increase your chances of passing first time and save money on retests.

What Is an MOT?

An MOT is a legal requirement for vehicles over 3 years old in the UK. It checks whether your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. It’s not the same as a car service — the MOT doesn’t involve dismantling or replacing parts — but it does ensure that your vehicle is safe and legal to drive.

When Is Your MOT Due?

You can check your MOT status online using your registration number. Don’t leave it to the last minute — driving without a valid MOT could result in a fine, points on your licence, and insurance issues.

Top Checks Before Your MOT Test

Here’s what you can check yourself before bringing your car to Moto-Oil Autocentre:

1. Lights

  • Check all exterior lights — headlights, brake lights, indicators, number plate lights.
  • Make sure they all work and replace any blown bulbs.

2. Tyres

  • Check for visible damage, cracks or bald patches.
  • The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm — use a 20p coin to check.
  • Ensure all tyres are inflated to the correct pressure.

3. Windscreen & Wipers

  • No cracks or major chips in the driver’s line of sight.
  • Wipers should clear water effectively without streaking or smearing.
  • Top up your screen wash — running out can be an MOT fail!

4. Mirrors

  • Check all mirrors are present, secure and not cracked.
  • Adjust them for full rear visibility before your test.

5. Brakes

  • Listen for squealing or grinding noises — signs pads may be worn.
  • If the pedal feels soft or the car pulls when braking, get it checked.

6. Number Plates

  • Make sure both plates are clean, legible, and securely attached.
  • The font and spacing must comply with UK standards.

7. Horn

  • Give it a quick test — it must be loud enough and work reliably.

8. Warning Lights

  • Dashboard warning lights (engine, ABS, airbag) that stay on could lead to a fail.
  • Get them diagnosed beforehand to avoid issues on the day.

Bonus Tip: Clean Your Car

A cluttered or filthy car — especially if the number plates or lights are dirty — can lead to an MOT refusal. A clean car also shows the tester you take care of your vehicle.

What If Your Car Fails?

If your car fails its MOT, don’t panic. We’ll give you a detailed list of reasons and explain your options. In many cases, we can carry out the necessary repairs quickly and retest it the same day.

At Moto-Oil Autocentre, we offer:
